April has been a public interest activist her entire adult life—working at the national and local levels on such issues as protection of the environment, protection of consumer rights, and the prevention of nuclear war.
She has been an elementary school teacher, and a writer and editor of newsletters on school safety, philanthropy, and nonprofit management.
April currently writes op-ed pieces from time to time for the Northern Virginia Daily and the Daily News-Record. She serves on the board of the Chesapeake Climate Action Network, a citizens’ organization working throughout Virginia, Maryland, and DC for climate solutions. And she is very active with the Shenandoah County Democratic Committee. She ran for state senate (SD-26) in 2015 and is running again this year, challenging the Republican incumbent Mark Obenshain.
April moved with her family to the Shenandoah Valley in 1992. She is happily married, and a mother and grandmother.
