SENATE BANS WAGE FLOORS IN LOCAL CONTRACTING

RICHMOND – This afternoon, on a party-line vote, the Senate passed HB 1753 by Delegate Glenn Davis (R-Virginia Beach) intended to prohibit local governing bodies from creating a wage floor or any other employee benefit or compensation above what is otherwise required by state or federal law.

Said Senate Democratic Leader Senator Dick Saslaw (D-Fairfax), "During campaign season, we hear 'local control, local control, local control'. Then our colleagues get down here and bring bills like this one to undermine the ability of localities to implement their ordinances. This isn't only hypocritical; it's a slap in the face to working families throughout the Commonwealth."

Said Senate Democratic Caucus Chair Senator Mamie Locke (D-Hampton), "Virginia's workers are willing to work hard and compete, but we cannot keep getting in their way by erecting barriers to them earning good-paying jobs -- which is exactly what this bill would do if it became law."
