RICHMOND – This afternoon, Senate Democratic Leader Dick Saslaw (D-Fairfax) and Senate Democratic Caucus Chair Mamie Locke (D-Hampton) issued the following statement congratulating Delegate-Elect Shelly Simonds (D-Newport News) on her victory this afternoon in the hotly contested recount in Virginia’s 94th House District:

"Voting matters, and the people of Newport News have spoken. We would like to congratulate and welcome our newest colleague, Delegate-Elect Shelly Simonds. The results of this afternoon’s recount in HD94 represent the final indicator in a seismic shift in who Virginians want to having representing them in the House of Delegates. We know that whatever happens next we must put partisan politics aside once and for all. The interests of everyday, hardworking Virginians must come first – now and always. We look forward to working with all of our colleagues on common sense solutions that will extend health coverage to nearly 400,000 Virginians, expand access to education and to workforce development programs statewide, and ensure ever-greater economic security for our friends and neighbors across our great Commonwealth."
