SENATE DEMOCRATIC LEADERSHIP VETO SESSION STATEMENT
RICHMOND -- This evening, Senate Democratic Leader Senator Dick Saslaw (D-Fairfax) and Senate Democratic Caucus Chair Senator Mamie Locke (D-Hampton) released the following joint statement coming out of the 2017 Reconvened Session:
For the fourth year in a row, Senate Democrats are proud to stand by Governor McAuliffe on every single veto that has come before us. We pledge to continue to be a barrier against jobs-killing, socially divisive policy proposals. The New Virginia Economy must be a magnet for companies that want to move to Virginia and create good-paying jobs. We pledge to fight for working families, and for localities to have the flexibility to set their own wage levels when it comes to public works contracts. We pledge to work as hard as ever to keep guns out of the hands of criminals, of the mentally ill, and of domestic abusers. We stand for a Virginia that works for all Virginians – not just those at the top.
It is high time for us to expand Medicaid here in Virginia once and for all. We continue to forfeit hundreds of thousands of dollars every single day that we fail to expand health coverage to some of the most vulnerable Virginians. Access to affordable, quality healthcare is a right – not a privilege – and the time has come for us to act.
