Senate Democrats Respond to Budget Vetoes
Richmond—Today, Senate Democratic Caucus Chair Mamie Locke (D-Hampton) issued the following statement regarding a vetoes to the 2019-2020 budget (HB 1700).
“Today’s vetoes rectify some of the extremist Republican positions inserted into this year’s budget, but their control of the majority continues to deprive Virginians of the healthcare and environmental protections they deserve.
“I am pleased to see the Governor’s veto of restrictions to state funding for long-acting reversible contraception (LARCs), but I remain gravely concerned about the restrictions to state funding for abortion services that remain in the budget. These restrictions disproportionately deprive low income women of access to reproductive care. A woman’s ability to pay for healthcare should not prevent her equal access to it. The inclusion of these measures in this year’s budget are just another example of Virginia Republicans forcing their extremist, partisan ideology on all Virginians, at the expense of their healthcare.
“Similarly, this year’s budget included a restriction on state funding to participate in the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative. This restriction prevents Virginia from joining forces with other states in our region to combat the brutal impact of climate change. As hurricanes that hit our coast grow stronger and sea levels continue to rise, we cannot afford Virginia Republicans’ denial of climate science.
“Today’s budget actions remind us just how critical it is that we retake the majority in both the Senate and the House this fall. Virginians cannot afford to wait any longer to have full and equal access to healthcare or to ignore the acute dangers of climate change.”
