Senate Democrats Respond to Haphazard Republican Tax Legislation
Richmond—Today, Senate Republicans unveiled their one-sided plan to give tax cuts to wealthy Virginians at the expense of those earning $54,000 or less. Senate Democratic Leader Dick Saslaw and Finance Committee Member Senator Janet Howell released the following statements in response to the Republican legislation.
“This plan totally ignores a substantial segment of Virginia’s population earning less than $54,000 a year,” said Democratic Leader Dick Saslaw. “We have the opportunity to pass straight bipartisan conformity legislation but instead, our colleagues on the other side of the aisle have added additional policy changes with no input from Senate Democrats.”
“Senate Democrats have urged bipartisan cooperation to conform our tax code since we returned to Richmond. For nearly a month, those calls have fallen on deaf ears," said Senator Janet Howell. “Today, Senate Republicans released a sweeping change to our tax code with no input from Democrats, despite the need for eighty percent of senators’ support to pass it. This haphazard approach to legislating is irresponsible and not in the best interest of Virginian families.”
