SENATE DEMS LEADRSHIP STATEMENTS ON KAVANAUGH CONFIRMATION

RICHMOND -- Today, as the Republicans of the US Senate forced through a confirmation vote of Judge Brett Kavanaugh, Virginia Senate Democratic Leader Dick Saslaw (D-Fairfax) and Virginia Senate Democratic Caucus Chair Mamie Locke (D-Hampton) issued the following statements.

Said Senator Saslaw, “What we are seeing today is unprecedented in our nation’s history. Former Justice John Paul Stevens and more than 2400 law professors have signed a letter opposing Kavanaugh’s nomination to the Supreme Court. Any President with an ounce of moral courage would have pulled the nomination after last week's testimony. Kavanaugh has proven himself temperamentally unfit to serve on the Supreme Court.”

Said Senator Locke, “Today's vote tips the balance of our nation's highest court in an alarming way, setting the stage for a barrage of  renewed attacks against women's reproductive rights. Kavanaugh has actively worked to block access to safe and legal abortions, but Virginia Senate Democrats hereby pledge to continue to fight to protect that fundamental right. We applaud our US Senators from Virginia, Tim Kaine and Mark Warner, as they continue to stand for what is right during these trying times.”
