Statement on 2014 Regular Session Deadline

RICHMOND, VA – In response to the resolution by House Republicans to extend the current session, Senate Democratic Caucus Chair Sen. Donald McEachin (D – Henrico) offered the following statement:

“The budget is not a term paper. There is no snow-day extension. We've been working on this for weeks and we have a firm deadline. It's Saturday, March 8th. The Senate has passed a budget, and we have been ready for a constructive debate on Marketplace Virginia. But House Republicans refuse to negotiate or even offer an alternative. We're ready to work out this issue right now. If these delegates already know they won't offer a meaningful alternative before Saturday, then they don't deserve an extension. They should use their time away from the General Assembly to hear the resounding chorus from hospitals, businesses, editorial boards and constituents who have asked for, and are waiting for, a real plan to return billions of federal tax dollars to Virginia and create a health care option for up to 400,000 Virginians who are without care.”
