RICHMOND - This afternoon, the Republican controlled Senate Local Government Committee reported HB 2000 by Charles Poindexter (R-Glade Hill) to ban sanctuary city policies throughout the Commonwealth on a party line vote. The bill now heads to the Senate Floor for what promises to be a lengthy floor debate.
Said Senator Barbara Favola (D-Arlington), "Local law enforcement entities throughout the Commonwealth desperately need the trust of the communities they police. That trust is undermined by implementing policies like these."
Said Senator Jennifer McClellan (D-Richmond), "What this bill says is if you don't do everything you are authorized to do under federal law to enforce immigration policy, you are also in violation of state law. So if you have a child at your school whose parent is here on a visa that has expired having applied for a new one that hasn't come through yet and you don't report the parent, you have violated federal and state law. That is simply the wrong direction to go."
Said Senator Dave Marsden (D-Fairfax), "There is a difference between a state or locality proactively interfering with enforcement of the law and one that does not proactively seek to enforce federal law. To my knowledge there has been no demonstrated need for a bill like this. This is another solution in search of a problem."
