RICHMOND - This morning, Senate Democrats pushed two bills through the Senate Finance Committee to provide more transparency and financial assistance to students dealing with the skyrocketing costs of higher education. SB 1527 was proposed by Senator Dick Saslaw (D-Fairfax) and passed unanimously. SB 1053 was proposed by Senator Janet Howell (D-Fairfax) and passed on a 12-3 vote.
Said Senator Saslaw, "This will help students throughout the Commonwealth receive financial assistance so they are not saddled with debt burdens that are currently keeping too many from successfully completing their studies on time and taking up one of the good paying jobs our Governor worked so hard to bring to the Commonwealth."
Said Senator Howell, "Currently, we have students being taken advantage of through predatory loan practices. Under my proposal, the process for becoming a student loan servicer is more rigorous. The goal is to make it impossible for bad actors to defraud our students."
