RICHMOND - This afternoon, on a strictly party line vote, the Republican-controlled Senate passed HB 1468 by Delegate Robert Marshall (R-Manassas) to confer responsibility for holding undocumented immigrants to local law enforcement until ICE arrives -- no matter how long that takes.
Said Senator Scott Surovell (D-Mount Vernon), "After years of bellyaching over unfunded mandates, what we're doing here is creating an unfunded mandate. There is already a problem with people waiting several weeks to be picked up by ICE while Virginia's taxpayers foot the bill."
Said Senator John Edwards (D-Roanoke), "This bill was written in such an ambiguous, haphazard fashion, I don't know how local law enforcement is supposed to understand, much less, enforce it. It's the responsibility of the federal government to enforce federal immigration law. Let them do their jobs."
Said Senator Favola (D-Arlington), "Our federal laws, federal executive orders, and now, federal executive tweets are getting very confusing at this point. This bill just adds to the confusion and is going to make individuals less likely to cooperate with local law enforcement -- which will make our communities less safe, not more safe."
