RICHMOND - This morning, in front of a committee room filled to capacity, the Senate Education and Health committee reported HB 2264 by Del. Ben Cline (R-Amherst) and Del. Dave LaRock (R-Hamilton) to strip state funding for entities that provide non-federal qualifying abortions on a party line vote, 8-7. A similar bill was vetoed by Governor McAuliffe last year and he has promised to veto this one as well.
Said Senator George Barker (D-Fairfax), "Dangerous bills like this make it more difficult for Governor McAuliffe to seal deals with the likes of Apple and Google; companies who would bring millions of dollars' worth of investment and good paying jobs. Companies are not going to come to Virginia if we're denying women access to basic healthcare services."
Said Senator Mamie Locke (D-Hampton), "With all of the issues confronting our great Commonwealth, I am ashamed that my colleagues - year after year - continue to waste the General Assembly's time with bills that, even if not vetoed by the Governor, will certainly be stuck down by the courts. Planned Parenthood plays an indispensable role in women's healthcare and I am proud to stand with them."
